This inspiring documentary follows the lives of a group of students in the American city of Baltimore in their senior year, attempting to win the step-dance championship for the first time. They attend an all-female school set up with the goal of graduating every student and placing them in higher education, in most cases becoming the first members of their family to do so. Amidst a series of social and economic pressures, the students are dealing with the aftermath of the police shooting of a young black man in their neighbourhood, an event that sparked nationwide riots but also empowered the dancers into creating a routine that is defiant, political and enormously uplifting. Along the way an enormous rapport is established with those involved, all of whom are sparky, witty and natural screen presences. Full details.
