Great War survivor Tom (Fassbender) keeps a lighthouse off the shore of Australia with his wife Isabel (Vikander). She is consumed with the desire to have a child – and when a baby girl washes ashore in a rowboat, seemingly orphaned after a shipwreck, Tom gives in to Isabel’s wish to raise her as their own.
But the couple meet a woman (Weisz) on the mainland who has lost her husband and child in circumstances that match their fortuitous find.
It seems the child’s biological mother is not dead, and they are forced to deal with the consequences of their decision to keep the baby.
Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) and his Academy Award winning cast have crafted a heartrending period drama.
