2024 | Dir Hasan Oswald | 90m | USA | Iraq

Mediha Ibrahim Alhamad is a Yazidi girl, kidnapped by ISIS fighters and later rescued and taken to a refugee camp, where we first meet her, filming her two brothers. Director Hasan Oswald mixes his own footage with hers, following Mediha and her rescuers’ attempts to find her youngest brother and her mother in the camps where the defeated ISIS soldiers are held, while battling against Covid and local prejudice. This award-winning documentary, with Emma Thompson as one of its producers, is a powerful and painful portrait of life in the shadow of slavery and genocide. Kurdish with English subtitles.

The screenings will be followed by a recorded Q&A at BSFTA with Emma Thompson (Exec producer) and Hasan Oswald (Director).

Listen to Mediha, and director Hasan Oswald talking with Nuala McGoven on Woman’s Hour – starts at 26m 13 secs in.
