A fine British cast lead this adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1951 tale of a young man plotting revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin.
Du Maurier’s books were already popular with Hollywood (‘Rebecca’, ‘Jamaica Inn’, ‘Frenchman’s Creek’) and ‘My Cousin Rachel’ was moved to the big screen almost as soon as it was published, in 1952, with Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton in the lead roles.
Phillip (Claflin) has been orphaned at an early age, with his older cousin Ambrose becoming his guardian. He suspects Ambrose’s wife Rachel (eponymously played by Rachel Weisz) of poisoning Ambrose and when the widow turns up at the Cornish family home he is deeply suspicious.
However, he quickly falls under her spell. But if his suspicions were right, does the same fate await him?
As well as a more modern sensibility from director and screenwriter Michell (Notting Hill, Enduring Love, Le Weekend), this gripping new production also features gorgeous Devon and Florence locations.
