Music by Bernstein, lyrics by Sondheim, choreography by Robbins – this is a musical masterwork, winning 10 Oscars, the most for any film musical. Updating Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to 1950s New York, this is the story of Tony, who is trying to escape the teenage gang he once led, and Maria, the girl he falls for at a local dance. Unfortunately for them both, she is the sister of the leader of the Puerto Rican gang who are Tony’s gang’s sworn enemies.
