RaMell Ross’s adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel by  is a moving film about Elwood, a young black man sent to a Florida reform school after unwittingly accepting a lift in a stolen car. Using subjective camera techniques and dreamlike flashbacks , the film gives a sense of a life robbed of potential, while not shying away from the brutality and racism of the Nickel Academy (based on a real school), that grinds Elwood and his friend Turner down until they escape… Reminiscent of Moonlight in its directorial boldness and style, this is “a searing drama with an abundance of style and hallucinatory visual splendor” (Vogue).
The afternoon screening is subtitled for those with hearing loss.
