During the 1980s and 1990s, Merchant Ivory Productions were the definition of the well-made costume drama, based on classical novels and starring a roster of great, usually British, actors. Director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant not only made films, with Merchant using colourful means to raise the budgets required, but were also lovers. Backed up by Booker Prize-winner Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and composer Richard Robbins, their body of work is celebrated in this documentary featuring stellar interviewees and sumptuous clips.
