OUR STORY
Cinema has become louder, faster, and more disposable. The shared experience – the quiet anticipation, the immersion, the feeling of discovering something meaningful together – has been lost in many places.
We believe cinema should be different.
In Croydon, a young David Lean first discovered the power of film – the ability to step beyond the everyday and into other worlds. That same spirit lives on here.
The David Lean Cinema was brought back to life by people who cared enough to fight for it. That care still defines us today. We are a volunteer-led, independent cinema dedicated to showing films that matter – films that entertain, challenge, inform and connect us to the wider world.
We serve a loyal and passionate audience, while working to welcome new and more diverse communities into our space. Through carefully curated programming, special screenings with celebrated directors and actors, and community partnerships across Croydon, we create a cinema experience that is inclusive, thoughtful, and welcoming.
Because when cinema is done well, it doesn’t just show stories – it brings people together, and takes us somewhere else, one film at a time.
