OFFICIAL SECRETS
Thursday 12 December 2019 at 2.30pm (Subtitled) and 7.30pm

Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Matt Smith

In 2003 a GCHQ translator receives an email requesting compromising details on UN representatives so they can be blackmailed into voting for the Iraq war.  Horrified, she engineers that email onto the Observer’s front page.  Katharine Gun (Knightley) is prosecuted and her Turkish husband’s deportation hastened.  She has only worked intermittently since.  Neither her revelation nor one million people marching that year derailed the war. Keira Knightley is excellent in Gavin Hood’s (Eye in the Sky) unmissable whistleblower thriller.

2019 | Dir Gavin Hood | 112min |  UK  USA

★★★★ “Keira Knightley shines as a very British whistleblower” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Director: Ralph Fiennes
Stars: Oleg Ivenko, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Ralph Fiennes

In the early 1960s, the Cold War didn’t prevent the Soviet authorities from sending the renowned Kirov Ballet to Paris, to demonstrate their cultural refinement. This unleashed the electrifying talent of a young Rudolf Nureyev, but the freedom he experienced also caused him to question whether he could ever find fulfilment in Russia. Director Fiennes offers a balanced portrait of an inscrutable man – played by Ukrainian dancer Ivenko in an astonishing debut – in a true story that also becomes a gripping suspense thriller.

Ralph Fiennes’ best film yet as a director – ★★★★ Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent
