Director: Adam McKay
Stars: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell
As vice-president to George W Bush, Dick Cheney may have been the most influential yet mysterious political figure of modern times. How did he rise to power? What – if anything – did he believe in? McKay (The Big Short) and the almost unrecognisable Bale have hilarious, and openly partisan, answers to these questions, in an unorthodox comedy that has been nominated for six Academy Awards.

Director: Tom Ford
Stars: Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
At a professional and personal low point, art gallery owner Susan (Adams) receives – out of the blue – a manuscript from her novelist ex-husband (Gyllenhaal), who she hasn’t seen in years.
Once a naïve romantic, Edward has now produced a vivid, shocking thriller.
Captivated, Susan, in a film-within-a-film visualises Edward’s tale of a family man (also played by Gyllenhaal) driven to violent revenge and is drawn into a re-evaluation of her life as past, present and fiction become entangled.
She finds herself drawn into a re-evaluation of her life and relationships as past, present and Edward’s fiction become entangled.
Directing a superb ensemble cast, Ford delivers not just the style of A Single Man but also gripping action and savage wit.

Bringing a baby is not compulsory but we cannot guarantee a quiet auditorium during this screening!
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Stars: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker
A dozen monolithic spaceships suddenly appear around the world.
As the public panic, linguist Louise (Amy Adams, who is dominating our early January programme) is drafted in to head up an elite team trying to communicate with the aliens inside.
As her understanding of their language grows, global tensions rise and there are profound implications for her own life.
Adams is in her element as the determined, brilliant Louise, and Villeneuve deftly combines stunning visuals with fascinating meditations on language and destiny.
