English teacher Tom Michell starts a job at a private school in Buenos Aires in 1976, just as the military junta takes power. While on holiday in Uruguay, he rescues a penguin from an oil slick. This unwanted pet soon becomes both a teaching aid and an ice-breaker when the political situation in the country worsens, and Michell becomes more involved with the lives of the staff and pupils at the school. Steve Coogan makes the most of a script from regular collaborator Jeff Pope, showing Michell slowly finding a new meaning to his life, thanks to his feathered friend.
The afternoon screening will be subtitled for those with hearing loss and followed by a discussion hosted by the Croydon u3a Film Group. All are welcolm to attend.
