Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda
Stars: Hiroshi Abe, Yôko Maki, Satomi Kobayashi, Kirin Kiki
Following last year’s Our Little Sister, a great favourite with David Lean patrons, Japan’s foremost director gives us another telling portrait of family life.
Middle-aged Ryota (Abe) is a failed writer having difficult relationships with his ex-wife, their son and his mother (Sweet Bean’s Kirin Kiki), who thinks he should have worked harder on being a writer. He now works as a private detective to finance maintenance payments – and his gambling addiction.
One night, as a typhoon approaches and people need to get off the streets for safety, he lures them to his mother’s flat. While his hope of achieving a reconciliation while they are sheltering from the storm may be too optimistic, perhaps all is not lost.
