THE BOY AND THE BEAST (12A) – 2015 Japan 119 min – subtitled

Director: Mamoru Hosoda
Stars: Koji Yakusho, Aoi Miyazaki, Shota Sometani

Young runaway Kyuta slips into a parallel world – a Japan-like civilisation of intelligent beasts, where he becomes the apprentice of the strong but wayward Kumatetsu. As they mature together, Kyuta and his master must both overcome great challenges to fulfil their destinies.

Image of film appears hereHugely entertaining, this action-packed contrast to Hosada’s previous gem Wolf Children maintains his visual and narrative flair and ability to create deep characters full of human (and animal!) emotion. “Excellent… there has not been a film that shifts between reality and fantasy so smoothly since Pan’s Labyrinth” (Sight and Sound).

In This Corner of the World (2016 Japan) Cert. 12A – subtitled

Director: Sunao Katabuchi
Voiced by: Non, Yoshimasa Hosoya, Daisuke Ono

Entering an arranged marriage at the age of 18, quiet, artistic Suzu moves from sleepy Hiroshima to the port city of Kobe.

As she adapts to a new way of life, the privations and dangers of the Second World War gradually creep closer to home.

This beautifully animated drama movingly explores family life in a corner of the world that was in some ways similar and in other ways very different to our own.

Here is a link to an analytical Review in The Telegraph written at the time of the film’s premiere at the Tokyo Film Festival.

The Red Turtle (2016 France/Belgium/Japan) Cert. PG

Director: Michael Dudok de Wit
Stars: Emmanuel Garijo, Tom Hudson, Baptiste Goy

A man is shipwrecked on a tropical island, with only birds and sea creatures for company.

Tired and hungry, he strives to survive and sail away on a home-made raft – until an encounter with a red turtle changes the course of his life…

This remarkable and mature animation, made in collaboration with the legendary Studio Ghibli, casts an enchanting spell as it charts the relationship between man and environment.

While not a ‘silent’ movie, the film is essentially dialogue free – “A wordless wonder” (Daily Telegraph).
