THE CHAMBERMAID

THE CHAMBERMAID
Tuesday 22 October 2019 at 7.30pm

Gabriela Cartol, Teresa Sánchez, Agustina Quinzi

Attracting inevitable comparisons with the Oscar-winning Roma, Avilés’ debut feature boasts a stunning performance from Cartol as Eve, a worker at a posh Mexico City hotel, through whose eyes we see the oblivious, often ridiculous guests who variously exploit and ignore her. Her quiet desire to pull herself up from her humdrum existence provides the emotional spine to this quirky, haunting piece with an uncompromising political subtext.

Spanish with subtitles.

2018 | Dir Lila Avilés | 102min |  Mexico |  USA

★★★★ “a terrifically assured feature debut” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“The Chambermaid’s wry humour and its ability to capture the cadences and implications of overheard conversations and incidental details mark out Avilés as a director to watch” Maria Delgado, Sight & Sound

The programme will also include our current BRIT School Showcase film RITUALS (PG, 5 mins), directed by Simisolaoluwa Akande. This reflective Year 13 film was part of a World Cinema strand.
