2024 | Dir Mike Leigh | 97m | UK | Spain
Stars: Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, David Webber

Yet again, the collaboration between Mike Leigh and Marianne Jean-Baptiste works its magic in this powerful look at ordinary families and why their members behave the way they do. Pansy is a difficult, unhappy woman who is disappointed in almost everyone, everything and life itself! The story unfolds like the layers of an onion and we start to learn something of what has made her this way. Her family love her despite her ways, but are not spared her wrath. Can Pansy ever fully come to terms with herself and her issues?

PETERLOO (12A) – 2018 UK 154 min

Director: Mike Leigh
Stars: Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Pearce Quigley

Manchester, 1819. As England recovers from the war with Napoleon, the poor are at the mercy of rich landowners, with prices kept artificially high by the Corn Laws. With hunger biting, angry working men start preaching suffrage and “one man one vote”, and unarmed civilians rally at Peters Field under the nervous eye of the authorities.  Peake is on powerful form as a mother whose family are caught up in the melee, as the Peterloo massacre is reconstructed in forensic detail by masterly veteran director Leigh (Vera Drake, Mr Turner).
