THE ROOM NEXT DOOR

2024 | Dir Pedro Almodóvar | 107m | Spain | USA

Pedro Almodóvar’s first English Language film delves into the complexities of companionship in the face of mortality. Estranged friends, Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton), reconnect when Ingrid is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As Ingrid faces her imminent death she turns to Martha for support. The Room Next Door explores the themes of friendship, love, and the profound choices we make at the end of life.
The afternoon screening is subtitled for those with hearing loss.

Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.

PAIN AND GLORY

PAIN AND GLORY
Thursday 17 October 2019 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm

Antonio Banderas, Asier Etxeandia, Penélope Cruz

Almodóvar joins the list of European auteurs (Fellini, Truffaut) who fictionalise the life of the film director. His hero (Banderas) hasn’t made a film in years, but has enough wealth to live comfortably and fight his physical and mental torments with drugs. A meeting with the star of his early masterpiece starts his creative juices flowing again, as does the memory of his mother (a wonderful cameo by Penelope Cruz) and of an early erotic encounter. “Pain and Glory leaves you with a sweet sadness.” (The Guardian)
