THE OUTRUN

2024 | Dir Nora Fingscheidt | 118m | UK | Germany

Rona (Saoirse Ronan) returns to her hometown in the Orkney Islands after completing rehab, unsure of her next steps as she rebuilds her life in sobriety. Based on Amy Liptrot’s memoirs, The Outrun follows Rona’s struggle to stay sober while living with her parents and searching for work and meaning. Through flashbacks, the film vividly portrays the chaos of her addiction—broken relationships, dangerous blackouts, and assault—offering a raw look at the isolation of both addiction and recovery.

The evening screening is subtitled for those with hearing loss.

2.30 screening subtitled for people with hearing loss

Director: Josie Rourke
Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, David Tennant, Guy Pearce

Queen of France at the age of sixteen, widowed the next year, Mary Stuart returned to rule her own country in turbulent times. Ronan gives a characteristically poised performance as the Scottish ruler, while Robbie is transformed as her English counterpart. A Women’s History Month Screening.

“Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan excel as wily foes in Josie Rourke’s striking take on the rivalry between Elizabeth I and her Scottish cousin” ★★★★ Mark Kermode, The Guardian

ON CHESIL BEACH (15) – 2017 UK 110 min

Director: Dominic Cooke
Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Anne-Marie Duff, Emily Watson

Image from filmFirst time director Cooke does true justice to Ian McEwan’s adaptation of his own novella, telling the story of a young couple’s first evening as a married couple, and the disastrous consequences of their inability to form a true bond.
Image from filmRonan and Howle portray the lovers with subtlety and understatement, backed up by a stellar cast in supporting roles. Beautifully filmed in Oxford, London and on the stark landscape of the beach itself, this is a subtle meditation on confused expectations and lost opportunities.
