Bollaín’s road-trip drama, written by her partner Paul Laverty (whose work on I, Daniel Blake was recently appreciated by a number of sell-out audiences at the David Lean), follows Alba (Anna Castillo) in her quixotic search for the 2000-year old olive tree beloved of her grandfather, which his children sold off to pay for a failed restaurant business.
She persuades her friend and a sceptical uncle to drive a truck from Spain to Dusseldorf to try to retrieve the tree from the foyer of a German energy company, gathering an online eco-activist following along the way.
The Olive Tree “has such charm and promotes such good” (The Irish Times).
