TEDDY PENDERGRASS – IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME
Saturday 22 June 2019 at 7.00pm. Presented by Rhythm & Views Film Festival
‘If You Don’t Know Me’ is the untold and ultimately inspiring story of legendary soul singer Teddy Pendergrass, the man who was poised to become the biggest R&B artist of all time until the tragic accident that changed his life.
Teddy became the first solo male African American artist to record five consecutive platinum albums in the US, but his career was struck by tragedy in 1982 when a car accident left him paralysed at the age of just 31. He later made a triumphant comeback in front of a global audience of 1.9 billion at Live Aid.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Director.

Many think of Pendergrass, born 1950 in Philadelphia, as an artist cut down in his prime by a 1982 auto accident. But if that’s all you remember about him, says filmmaker Olivia Lichtenstein, you’re missing the full measure of his inspiring story of persistence, never more evident than in the final years of his life, when he nearly succumbed to depression after the accident that paralyzed him but rallied to regain his voice and his spirit.
