This dark psychological drama, based on a true story and exquisitely filmed in black-and-white, is set in Copenhagen in the dark days following the First World War. Karoline is a young woman who has fallen pregnant by her employer while her husband is missing in action. Evicted from her tenement flat, she is befriended by Dagmar, a seemingly kindly sweet shop owner. Karoline’s life is further complicated by the return of her husband, who was facially disfigured in combat. Magnus von Horn has created a grim tale of Dickensian dimensions – the performances, cinematography and music making this an unsettling but truly powerful watch.
