1863, the Oregon Trail. 11-yr-old Martha Jane accompanies her two younger siblings and widowed, impoverished father on a wagon train way out West. Discontent to simply gather firewood and cook, her rebellious, unfeminine behaviour outrages the group’s leaders. “Control your daughter”, they admonish, but when her father is injured in an accident Martha Jane rises to the occasion, donning men’s clothes, cutting her hair and generally taking control of the family’s wagon and the situation. When simmering resentment of this snub to authority leads to an accusation of stealing, she sets out solo on horseback to track down whom she believes is the real thief. French with English subtitles.

N/C 15+ SUMMER SURVIVORS
2018 | Dir Marija Kavtaradze | 91 mins | Lithuania

An ambitious young research psychologist, Indre, who has reluctantly agreed to transport two patients from one psychiatric unit to another in
exchange for research privileges at her clinic, finds herself the leader of a rather rag-tag band on the long journey to the sea. Outgoing Paulius is a young man whose manic stage of his bipolar disorder stands in great contrast to the introvert Juste whose wounds are hidden from sight, but they both struggle to fight the inner battles that define them. As they all navigate the survival process together, what looks like a carefree summer ride with friends sharing laughs from the outside, could actually be the beginning of healing in this bittersweet story that — just like summer — is full of hopes, surprises and the promise that anything is possible.

THE WITCHES OF THE ORIENT

THE WITCHES OF THE ORIENT (2021)
2021 | Dir
Julien Faraut | 100 mins | France

‘The Witches of the Orient’ are former players of the Japanese women’s volleyball team, named so because of their seemingly supernatural powers on the courts. Now in their 70s, Julien Faraut’s gripping and playful documentary tells the story of this legendary squad, who, inspiring legions of fans and a whole cult genre of manga comics and anime shows, have left a unique sporting and cultural legacy.
Featuring striking 16mm colour reels of the team in training, together with previously unseen archive footage produced by the Japanese Olympic Committee in 1964, alongside a montage of vintage manga and TV material, Faraut’s compelling film also brings together contemporary interviews with four of the original ‘witches’. It charts the formation of the unstoppable all-female squad in the late 1950s as a worker’s team at a textile factory in Post-War Osaka, who, with their notorious coach Hirobumi Daimatsu, trained through the night, rising to become world champions in 1962, before their sensational triumph at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
English, French and Japanese with English subtitles.

A complex but delicate love story about two older women who have hidden their relationship for years until one of them becomes ill.
This remarkable feature debut tells a deceptively complex love story while presenting a rich acting showcase. Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine have kept their relationship secret for years – everyone thinks they are just neighbours, while in fact they come and go between their apartments across the shared landing. But their intimacy is threatened when Madeleine becomes ill and her daughter (Léa Drucker) can’t understand why the nice old lady from next door is so concerned with her mother’s welfare. Nina, however, is not going to give up on her love, whatever it takes.

When I was still living in the United States, I stumbled upon an article describing the incredible story of Erika Labrie, an Olympic goldwinner in archery, who got married to the Eiffel tower in 2004 and became Erika Eiffel. She was said to suffer from the “Objectum sexual” condition. It struck me as the most improbable story, but it encouraged me to think further: How did she become like that? What draws her to objects? How does she experience her love? When did she know? So I contacted her… Only to realize she was one of the most grounded people I had ever met. The contrast was fascinating.

Martin Eden is a sad story of a sad man who lacks the capacity for happiness and who is astonished to find that artistic success is as compromised as any other kind. But there is a kind of thrill in tracing his progress from rags to riches to annihilation. Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian
