2020 Film Festivals Announcement

More than 20 film festivals around the world have joined together to stream movies for free on YouTube after the coronavirus pandemic closed cinemas and forced the cancellation of annual showcases in Cannes and New York.
The 10-day We Are One: A Global Film Festival will feature content curated by the Berlin, Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca and Venice film festivals, among others, starting on 29 May, the organisers Tribeca Enterprises and YouTube said in a statement on Monday 27 April.
The festival will showcase films, documentaries, music, comedy and conversations. No details of the programming were announced and it is unlikely that major new movies that generally launch at film festivals would be included.
The cancellation of the May Cannes film festival in France and uncertainty around festivals in Venice and Toronto in September has robbed film-makers and movie studios of crucial windows to promote their new releases to the media and the public.
The organisers of the Cannes film festival said on Monday they were proud to join in the YouTube event “to spotlight truly extraordinary films and talent, allowing audiences to experience both the nuances of storytelling from around the world and the artistic personalities of each festival”.
Jane Rosenthal, a co-founder of the cancelled Tribeca film festival in New York, said the idea was to inspire and unite people across borders during the pandemic. “All of the world needs healing right now,” Rosenthal said.
Other festivals taking part include those in Jerusalem, Mumbai, Sarajevo, Sydney, Tokyo and London.
While the festival will stream for free, viewers will be asked to donate to the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 solidarity response fund.

Queen-Rock The World

Behind-the-scenes archive documentary following Queen’s Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon as they record their sixth album News of the World and embark on a groundbreaking tour of North America.
By 1977, Queen had become a major headlining act in the UK, releasing chart-topping albums and singles as well as playing sell-out concerts in all the country’s major venues. However, they were facing an increasingly hostile music press, who had a new favourite in punk and had turned against the elaborate, multi-layered recording techniques that had become the hallmark of the band’s previous albums.<!–more–>
An unfazed Queen had their sights set on greater things. As the band announced plans to record their next album, the expectation was it would be another production extravaganza, but Freddie, Brian, Roger and John already had other ideas. News of the World showcased them at their most raw, simple and best, returning to their roots as a live act. With a self-imposed limit on studio time and produced entirely on their own for the first time, this stripped-back album took the fans and press by surprise and demonstrated Queen’s ability to transcend fashions. It was to prove a seminal moment in the band’s history.
At the time, BBC music presenter Bob Harris was given exclusive and extensive access to the band to cover this period. Conducting insightful interviews with all four band members as well as filming them at work in the studio as they were planning and rehearsing their forthcoming North American tour, and then following them as they performed across the US, Bob captured a band attempting to replicate their huge domestic success on the global stage. Curiously, the documentary he set out to make was never completed, and the footage lay unused in the archive until now.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the News of the World album, the footage has now been carefully restored and revisited to compile this hour-long portrait of a group setting out to take the next step on their remarkable journey to becoming one of the biggest bands on the planet. Armed with an array of new songs, including the monster hits We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, Queen dazzled the American audience and laid the foundations of a relationship that endures to this very day.
Coming full circle, this film is bookended by footage shot in the summer of 2017 as Brian May and Roger Taylor took Queen back to the US with Adam Lambert as lead singer. Revisiting many of the cities they had performed in 40 years previously and including many of the songs from that 1977 album, they prove that despite the tragic loss of Freddie Mercury over 25 years ago, Queen can still rock the world.

Volunteer Handyman

‘Handyman’ Volunteer

Please note: the terms ‘Handyman’ and ‘Handyman Team’ have been used in order to avoid any implication that members of the team have taken over aspects of Croydon Council’s maintenance responsibilities. Female volunteers are of course equally welcome and we may reconsider the term in future.

Duties and Responsibilities

Although the David Lean Cinema (together with the rest of the Town Hall and Croydon Clocktower) are the property of Croydon Clocktower, and thus are maintained by the Council, we have Council approval to take responsibility for certain miscellaneous tasks, although more substantial ones will need specific Council approval. This will enable us to undertake certain non-specialised repairs and improvements – that the Council might consider a low priority – much sooner. We can also consider repainting furnishings and areas that the Council would only get round to very infrequently. The result should be a more pleasant environment and a sense of greater efficiency in certain respects. This will help us to convey that the David Lean is a cared for venue, enhancing its appeal to patrons. Most work is likely to be in the cinema auditorium; the lobby area between the inner and outer doors; the Arts Bar; or possibly the projection box.  Enthusiasm will be valued as well as:

  • Familiarity with the use of various tools
  • Carpentry skills
  • Painting skills

Time Commitment

Unlike most of our roles, this will be highly variable as the work is bound to be irregular, and we will try to match the skills of team members to the tasks that arise. Therefore, you might undertake a job that’s very useful to the Campaign, but only takes 30 minutes, and this might be your only involvement in a particular month. Alternatively, a painting project might involve several hours of work in a particular week. The ‘Handyman Team’ could therefore be a good option for people keen to offer skills, but without necessarily wanting to take on regular or more time-consuming responsibilities.

Desirable Qualities

In addition to having one or more of the skills indicated, a willingness to work as part of a team is needed. Attention to detail is desirable as ongoing approval from the Council will depend on the work being of a reasonable standard. Awareness of safety issues in a public place will also be needed, especially as some tasks may be undertaken at times when members of the public are passing through the Arts Bar. We can expect (e.g.) use of ladders to be very restricted, if allowed at all, so expect some frustrations!

Training

We don’t currently propose formal training other than a meeting at which certain operational guidelines will be mentioned, but there will probably be scope for some team members to pick up skills while assisting whoever oversees a particular task.

How will it work?

We anticipate that a Team Leader (yet to be appointed) will plan work in consultation with the Campaign Director. He/she will notify team members of opportunities when they arise, inviting volunteers. Work involving particular team members will then be scheduled, once approved (if necessary) by the Council.

What to do now?

If you would like to help and/or know more, simply click on “Contact Us” in the website menu and give us some brief details about yourself, including your phone number, stating that you’re interested in joining the ‘Handyman Team’. Please include “Volunteers” in the subject line. We’ll get back to you.

Volunteer Arts Bar

Arts Bar Role Description

Duties and Responsibilities  You will perform an important role as the public face of the Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign before a film screening, ensuring that our customers have an enjoyable and positive experience. Our volunteers are vital in enabling films to be shown at the David Lean Cinema.

  • Preparing the arts bar and equipment ready for service
  • Welcoming patrons in the arts bar area
  • Serving drinks and snacks
  • Taking payment and recording sales
  • Being aware of hygiene requirements and care of equipment
  • Clearing away when patrons have gone into the cinema
  • Being vigilant at all times, with regard to the safety and security of customers, colleagues and yourself and reporting problems quickly and clearly

Time Commitment  Opportunities for the arts bar exist during evening screenings as per the film programme.  Film times are usually 7.30. Volunteer arts bar staff should arrive by 6.15 at the latest to set up and be ready to serve at 6.30. Once the patrons go into the film you will do all the necessary clearing away and storing of equipment.

Desirable Qualities  Experience of working with the public, experience in food service and an interest in film are useful.  You need to be reliable, punctual, friendly and polite. Volunteers must wear an identifying David Lean t-shirt.

Arts bar volunteers will be given training, which will cover all necessary information relating to the role. New staff shadow the role with an experienced volunteer during their initial shifts.

How does it work? Our Volunteer Co-ordinators ask volunteers for their availability on a monthly basis and most do 1 or 2 sessions a month. Sometimes a volunteer is unable to come for their duty, for a variety of reasons, and then the person doing the monthly schedule will contact others who were available and ask if they could fill in.

What to do now? If you would like to become part of the team, simply click on “Contact Us” in the website menu and give us some details about yourself including your phone number and the role you are interested in. Please include “Volunteers” in the subject line. We’ll get back to you.

Tram derailment – Council arrangements postpone screenings

Following the tram incident near Sandilands on the morning of Wednesday 09 November, the Council have informed us that they need to use the Braithwaite Hall and the David Lean Cinema premises as temporary accomodation/meeting rooms for friends and family involved in the incident. The two screenings of “Ingrid Bergman, In Her Own Words” has therefore had to be postponed until 30 November. Tickets for both screenings on 10 November will be valid for the appropriate screening on 30 November. Requests for refunds or other issues should be sent via the Contact Form on this website unless you have had previous communication via phone or email with us and the matter is already in hand.
